PEW has released a new survey that shows how Americans view Muslims. I won't bother with that, but take a look at this stat.
43% of Americans have favourable opinions on Muslims, while only 35% have favourable opinions of Atheists. Further, while 35% have unfavourable views of Muslims, 53% have unfavourable views of Atheists.
So I just have to ask: who crashed two planes into the fucking WTC? Who are the terrorists in the Middle East? Who used bombs in Madrid & London? Who are behind most of the terrorist attackes the last ten years if you check out this list?
Atheists? No, I don't think so. There are a couple of really mean writers, but I doubt anyone of them even has a gun (well apart from Hitchens perhaps).
America. Get real.

I feel that outrage, too. It's just so ridiculous. But we all know what it's all about. If they weren't ridiculous they wouldn't be theists.
But does it even make sense to compare atheists relativistically to Muslims? Do we really care who Christians hate more? They're all dumb.
True, only it matters politically.
I just want to say that I am a Christian and have seen my fellow Christians treat atheists and muslims terribly and it is a great shame. Obviously fantatical muslims that want to kill everyone who will not convert to Islam need to be stopped, but there are millions of moderate muslims who just want to live in peace and serve their God the only way they know how.
As far as atheists, I can't relate with not believing in a higher power..but I believe in their right to believe the way they do and their right to live in society without discrimination and ridicule.
I just wanted you to know that this Christian does not hate you or other atheists. :)
That is why I use a pseudonym for my posting... I love to comment on the issues in the news about religion and it's archaic influences, but I can't lose my job and hurt my family just so I have a soapbox to yell from.
To Tia, that was a very "Christian" response, and I commend you. Unfortunately, most of your representatives lash out with unmitigated hate at the atheist blog postings. Yours was polite without being, literally, "holier than thou".
That said, you are young and seem intelligent. Look into your religion, consider the alternatives, study the foundations of all religions, then make your mind up. That's what led me to a great awakening, but it will not work for everyone... and that is cool also.
Tia, I commend your attitude but please understand that you are in the minority. Here is a bette example of the way most atheist are treated by Christians.

Why does it really matter politically? I don't think it does in the long run.
What's more important than the rather constant slander of atheism is the growing disapproval of Christianity itself.
I was at a church recently where the pastor went on to say "You may not like his politics... I certainly don't, but Falwell was a Christian and should be mourned... "
Plenty of other times I've heard protestants talk about the need to "remove religion from god," which I always interpret as equivalent to "do as I say, not as I do," especially since it's often used in the context of church malfeasance. I've heard a preacher go as far as to admonish, "religion is the path to ruin! Follow the path to Jesus instead!"
I've really started taking notice of this when Christians started asking me "now, when you say that religion is bad for society, do you realize that there is a difference between religion and Jesus?" Well... no, there isn't, actually. There is nothing more beyond that little fabrication used as a basis for this dreaded religion - nothing but a silly little story full of hate and discontent.
Looks more and more like they don't trust their political leaders, don't trust their preachers, don't trust their own churches. And why should they?
